“Veeraporn’s Bangkok is an immersive experience, exotic but not exoticized.” -- The New York Times Book Review

On the day Chareeya is born, her mother discovers her father is having an affair with a dancer. Chareeya and her sister Chalika thus grow up in a family devoid of affection and attention. Yet, the two sisters find solace in their own ways: for Chareeya, it is nature and western classical music that provide refuge, while Chalika seeks comfort in tons of romance novels and baking.

Then Pran, a quiet orphan neighbor, enters their lives. As children, the threesome spend every day together, exploring both the familiar world around them in their riverside village and the intriguing new one opened up by the sisters’ eccentric uncle who studied abroad. Inevitably, Pran falls in love with Chareeya, only to be heartbroken when she elopes with a rebel to Bangkok.

Years later, Pran, now a bassist in a Bangkok club, unexpectedly runs into Chareeya on the street. The two sisters and the boy find themselves once again entangled in the labyrinth of their deepest desires.

Veeraporn Nitiprapha possesses a force to turn words into a sensory experience filled with dazzling sounds, lush scents and vibrant colors. With her lyrical prose, Nitiprapha weaves a poignant yet beautiful love triangle about lust and lost.
