“The Paradise of Thorns illustrates how the pain of social inequality becomes a legacy passed down through generations.” -- TODAY News Thailand, Review of the Movie
Thongkam and Sek have spent five years pouring their blood, sweat, and life savings into a durian orchard in rugged mountains of Northern Thailand. For Thongkam, this plantation is more than a livelihood; it is the "paradise" he built to secure a future with the man he loves.
But just as the trees finally begin to bloom, promising their first golden harvest, tragedy strikes: Sek dies in an accident, and Thongkam’s world shatters overnight.
Their union was never recognized by law, Thongkam is legally a stranger to the land he painstakingly tilled. Within days, Sek’s mother, Saeng, arrives to claim her "rightful inheritance," bringing with her Mo, an adopted daughter, and Jingna, Mo’s younger brother.
But Thongkam refuses to surrender. As he wages a bitter war to reclaim his home, he discovers that Mo is driven by a desperation equal to his own—clinging to the orchard as her final escape from a life of suffocating poverty.
The boundaries between victim and villain begin to blur. Thongkam soon realizes that the sharpest thorns aren't on the durians; they are embedded in a social hierarchy that forces the marginalized to tear each other apart for the crumbs of a dream.
Visceral, atmospheric, and profoundly haunting, THE PARADISE OF THORNS is a story of how love curdles into vengeance when the law refuses to see you, and how the pursuit of a "heaven on earth" can rapidly spiral into a living hell.
